The central aim of this book is to answer two questions: Are the alternatives for choice ever incomparable? And, in what ways can items be compared? The arguments offered suggest that alternatives for choice no matter how different are never incomparable, and that the ways in which items can be compared are richer and more varied than commonly supposed. Investigation of comparability and incomparability is of critical importance because, as argued, there can be no justified choice among incomparable alternatives. The existence of widespread incomparability, then, undermines the possibility of leading lives of reason. The arguments against incomparability in the work and for a broad conception of comparability serve to vindicate the incomparability, value and practical reason
