The need for light-weight materials, especially in the automobile industry, created renewed interest in innovative applications of magnesium materials. This demand has resulted in increased research and development activity in companies and research institutes in order to achieve an improved property profile and better choice of alloy systems. Here, development trends and application potential in different fields like the automotive industry and communication technology are discussed in an interdisciplinary framework.

Author Biography

Professor Kainer is Director of Institute for Materials Research at the GKSS Forschungszentrum Geesthacht and Professor at the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg. His main research focuses on magnesium alloys and metal matrix composites, with a special focus on applications in the automobile industry. He cooperates in research projects with major European and American car manufactures as well as with research institutes in Asia, America and Europe. He was also Chairman of the three International Magnesium Conferences in Germany, organised by the DGM, and he gave invited lectures at many international conferences, including the TMS Annual Meetings in the US.
