Evelyn's alcoholic husband beats her, humiliates her, and treats her like dirt. She put up with his mental and physical abuse for years for the sake of the kids, but after she knocks him unconscious with a whiskey bottle to protect her teenage son, she takes the kids and flees to a women's shelter.
