Description

Text in English & German. This volume contains a bilingual (German-English) edition of poems by the Austrian-Jewish writer Theodor Kramer (1897-1958), assembled and translated by Frederick Brainin (New York) and Joerg Thunecke (Nottingham) who has also written an afterword. The sixty poems presented here were written during the period of exile in England between 1938 and 1957. Kramer provides a vivid account of the problems facing German-speaking emigrants forced to leave Nazi-occupied territories in the 1930s, a foreigner's view of his adopted new homeland, and the difficulties confronting such writers at the end of the war regarding repatriation. The book is divided into seven sections, each of which is introduced by a drawing specially supplied by the author's artist niece, Edith Kramer (New York), and a young Austrian painter, Willy Pechtl (Innsbruck).
