Having no ability to stomach any type of gore in movies, I opted to read the book instead. As always, it's much more in-depth – and several elements that are in the book have been left out of the film, such as the paedophilic nature of Eli's ‘guardian’.

The book is certainly gruesome, and very disturbing in places but I found myself totally drawn into it – Lindqvist manages to make you pity/feel for Oskar in a way which allows you to look past the things he does, the things Eli does for him – and genuinely love the two characters and cheer them on. Definitely worth a read, especially if you're wanting more depth than a movie can offer.

Description

This extraordinary and powerful novel is part horror, part comedy and mostly love story. A moving, affectionate and, at times, grisly portrait of the agony of growing up and finding love, Let the Right One In, may be the most satisfying novel of the year.

It is autumn 1981 when the inconceivable comes to Blackeberg, a suburb in Sweden. The body of a teenage boy is found, emptied of blood, the murder rumored to be part of a ritual killing. Twelve-year-old Oskar is personally hoping that revenge has come at long last--revenge for the bullying he endures at school, day after day.

But the murder is not the most important thing on his mind. A new girl has moved in next door--a girl who has never seen a Rubik’s Cube before, but who can solve it at once. There is something wrong with her, though, something odd. And she only comes out at night. . . .

Reviews

"A terrifying supernatural story yet also a moving account of friendship and salvation" - Guardian.

"Some truly scary bits - will haunt your dreams. Best read by sunlight" - Independent on Sunday.

“Sweden's Stephen King...a classic tale of horror.”---Tucson Citizen

"Lindqvist has reinvented the vampire novel and made it all the more chilling by setting it in the kind of sink estate we all know from the media. Immensely readable and highly disturbing" - Daily Express.
