Description

With the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I in August 2014 it is a good time to reflect on this first great world war whose scars led to an even greater conflagration in World War II. Nearly 100 years after his death the author discovered his grandfather's last letter to his wife only 9 days before he was killed in action leading his infantry company through the Meuse Argonne forest shortly before the end of the war. One of the most highly decorated soldiers of the war - with two silver stars - his letter is not so personal that it cannot be shared. For the author and hopefully others it will give a glimpse into what it was like to serve in that war. It is also hoped that it will encourage readers to learn more about World War I and its continuing influence on world affairs.
