"For Better or For Worse" is an American comic strip and "Laugh 'n' Learn" uses a selection of 100 Spanish-language syndicated versions of these strips as a means of presenting conversational language to learners of Spanish. Many typical themes and functions where learners of Spanish want to expand their conversational skills are covered such as making demands and requests, expressing hopes and wishes, talking about plans and the future, the household, shopping, types of food. As with all comic strips, the Spanish text appears in small, speech-bubble segments that are manageable for learners. In addition, the storyline of the strip provides the learner with a strong incentive to read and understand the text. Each strip is accompanied by foot glosses that translate difficult or new Spanish vocabulary, language notes that provide learners with guidance on correct usage, and an entertaining question to test understanding. Also, each cartoon strip is graded by difficulty so that learners can focus on the level appropriate to their abilities. A review section, adoping a light and entertaining tone, is included at the back of the book to test the learner's grasp of vocabulary and commonly used structures. In addition, the original English text for the cartoon strips is provided at the back of the book as reference for those learnerrs who want to check that they really understood them.
