Excerpt from La Coja Y El Encogido Between the years 1818 and 1822, Hartzenbusch had the advantage of acquiring the foundation of a good education in the Jesuit college of San Isidro el Real in Madrid. He there pursued the subjects taught, consisting mostly of Latin, rhetoric, and phil Osophy, and acquired a taste for study to which he was naturally inclined. An event which made a marked im pression upon him occurred in his fifteenth year. In 1821, together with some companions, he went for the first time to a theater. The play was Rossini's Opera Antinous in Eleusis sung in Italian. The play was well staged and the entire effect most pleasing. Hartzen busch felt the strongest kind of an attraction for the theater, and towards it from that time, despite his father's pronounced aversion, his taste and studies led him on. About this t1me he happened to get hold of Father Losado's work on Spanish versification which introduced him into the art of metrical composition.
