"I've been waiting for yonks to get my hands on this one"

And it doesn't disappoint. Unlike many others, I wasn't fortunate enough to be able to read it when it first came out free online. It was worth the wait.

It's laugh-out-loud funny but with a truly literary style, and I couldn't put it down.

"Brilliant funny book!"

When a story that was originally released on the internet for free got published twice and also made into an upcoming movie you know that it must be pretty special and you wouldn't be wrong here.

I first read this on the internet and still wanted to buy a copy because of what a great, funny read it is. Please don't wave it off as just a “funny” book though, it has a great, smart and absurd story that after re-reading has some really good subtle foreshadowing of later events and realisations and a great kick in the head twist at the end thats up there with fight club and usual suspects.

You will want to lock yourself away for a day or two as this is one of those stories that you will want/need to read in one sitting and then read it all over again.

Description

It’s a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly, a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can’t.

John Dies at the End has been described as a “Horrortacular”, an epic of “spectacular” horror that combines the laugh out loud humor of the best R-rated comedy, with the darkest terror of H.P. Lovecraft.

Review

"In this reissue of an Internet phenomenon originally slapped between two covers in 2007 by indie Permutus Press, Wong—Cracked.com editor Jason Pargin's alter ego—adroitly spoofs the horror genre while simultaneously offering up a genuinely horrifying story. The terror is rooted in a substance known as “soy sauce,” a paranormal psychoactive that opens video store clerk Wong's—and his penis-obsessed friend John's—minds to higher levels of consciousness. Or is it just hell seeping into the unnamed Midwestern town where Wong and the others live? Meat monsters, wig-wearing scorpion aberrations and wingless white flies that burrow into human skin threaten to kill Wong and his crew before infesting the rest of the world. A multidimensional plot unfolds as the unlikely heroes drink lots of beer and battle the paradoxes of time and space, as well as the clichés of first-person-shooter video games and fantasy gore films. Sure to please the Fangoria set while appealing to a wider audience, the book's smart take on fear manages to tap into readers' existential dread on one page, then have them laughing the next."
