Author Biography:

Jay Satia is a Senior Advisor to the President, Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi, and Professor Emeritus at the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH), Gujarat. He was a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) for more than 20 years and served as its Dean during 1987–89. At IIM-A, he worked on operations management as well as on management of health, population and nutrition programmes. During the period 1993–2008, Professor Satia was the Executive Director of the International Council on Management of Population Programmes (ICOMP), a Malaysia-based international non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to seeking excellence in management of population programmes. He has several publications to his credit, including his co-edited book titled Innovations in Maternal Health: Case Studies from India published by SAGE Publications in 2014. Kavita Chauhan is a Programme Manager at PHFI, New Delhi. She has 11 years of experience in providing technical assistance for health communication strategy design, developing and managing interventions related to health promotion and advocacy. Her earlier work integrated planning and implementing programme strategies related to HIV/AIDS and reproductive health needs of communities. She has participated in formulating health policy interventions with the government, faith-based organisations and NGOs, and supported decentralised programme planning and provided technical support for developing evidence for advocacy on emergent public health issues. She has an MSc in Public Health from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK, and MA in Social Work from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Aruna Bhattacharya is an Associate Professor at IIPH, New Delhi. Her interest areas are Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program-Directly Observed Treatment, ShortCourse (RNTCP-DOTS) and National HIV/AIDS Control Programme (NACP) with special emphasis on harm reduction programme. Her expertise lies in working with the marginalised population in slums, tribal pockets and cut-off areas. She has a strong background in qualitative research methodologies in health systems research (HSR) and she utilises both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, integrating behavioural research with epidemiology. She has a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Delhi. Nirmala Mishra is a Senior Programme Manager at PHFI, New Delhi. She has over 16 years of experience in strategy development, providing technical support, project management and capacity building. She was previously associated with National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Futures Group and European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS) Health India where she contributed to health policy development, systems strengthening and programme planning. She has an MA in Social Work from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.
