Under Robert the Bruce and the Stuart kings, Scottish independence from England and its sense of nationhood consolidated and grew. Grant shows how this had a profound effect upon domestic politics, foreign relations and the evolution of a distinct Scottish government, nobility, Church and economy. Yet at the same time he argues that Scotland was not isolated and puts Scottish history firmly into the international context of the Hundred Years War, economic and demographic upheaval following bubonic plague, and the movement towards Reformation.
