Description

The first New Zealand woman to win an Olympic gold medal, a feat not repeated for forty years.

The remarkable true story of a trailblazing young woman who defied the odds to become an Olympic gold medallist in long jump at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki.

The text, written by Olympian gymnast and journalist Angela Walker expertly draws the reader into 1950s New Zealand and into the life of a humble and shy young woman who trained hard and was eventually rewarded with Olympic glory.

Drawing on the late Dame Yvette Williams’ never-before-seen diaries, as well as interviews recorded before her death, this is a long overdue celebration of an extraordinary achievement and a chronicle of a young woman’s uncommon quest.
