The Class 20, also known as the English Electric Type 1, is a small Bo-Bo diesel locomotive manufactured by BR in the late 1950s and early 1960s, designed for light mixed freight traffic with 1000 horsepower. A total of 228 were built, but they became less competitive with newer locomotives during the 1970s.
Class 20 locomotives were challenging to operate ‘nose’ first due to limited visibility, similar to steam locomotives. They often ran in pairs, appearing as standard diesel locomotives. As of 2022, six are still in service, 22 are preserved, and a few are in storage, with others scrapped.
Locomotive 20189, originally D8189, entered service in 1967 and was later renumbered to 20189. It was withdrawn in September 1990, now preserved by 20189 Ltd in its original 20/0 condition, mainline certified, and painted in BR Blue livery with Loram Rail decals. The Class 20 model features a three-pole motor with traction tires and an 8-pin DCC socket for digital operation.
