Hornby – LNER Rebuilt Cl.W1 ‘10000’
Sir Nigel Gresley's locomotive, the W1 4–6–4HP 10000, underwent a significant transformation starting in 1935. Initially scheduled for a major overhaul, Gresley decided to rebuild it into a three-cylinder locomotive with a conventional firetube boiler. The modifications included fitting a diagram 111 boiler, adding a streamlined casing similar to the A4 class, and utilizing components from various locomotive classes. The cab was elongated, necessitating adjustments to the tender's coal delivery chute. Although the original tender was retained with some superficial modifications, it underwent further changes in 1938.
Until 1939 and during World War II, 10000 primarily operated on Kings Cross main line duties and was favored by LNER's drivers for its power and smooth ride. Post-war, it was renumbered 60700 and received a streamlined non-corridor tender from another locomotive. It took on more diverse tasks, including passenger services to Leeds and Cambridge, lodging turns to Newcastle, and various goods trains. Despite plans to name it “Pegasus,” the locomotive never received this intended nameplate.
