The British Railways Standard 9F Class was a 2–10–0 steam locomotive designed by Robert Riddles for long-distance heavy express freight hauling. A total of 251 were built between 1954 and 1960, with ‘Evening Star’ (No. 92220) as the last steam locomotive by British Railways.
The locomotive's unique design featured a distinctive void between the suspended boiler and the footplate due to the 2–10–0 wheel configuration. Despite this, the 9F class proved versatile, excelling in both freight and passenger service, even outperforming dedicated express locomotives at times.
Some 9Fs were equipped with mechanical stokers for efficient coal delivery, but these were not common in British railways. Locomotive 92002 was one of the 9Fs, built in 1954 and eventually withdrawn in 1967.
Modern models of the 9F class accurately replicate the prototype's design, including a diecast boiler and chassis, authentic colors, detailed cabs, crew figures, and a flickering firebox feature. These models offer impressive pulling power in 4mm scale.
