Hobby Master: 1/72 F/A-18E “Rhino” – Diecast Model
The McDonnell Douglas Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet is a twin-engine multi-role carrier-based aircraft. The “E” variant is single-seater while the “F” variant is a tandem-seat configuration. The “E” is a much larger, more advanced and more capable variant of the F/A-18C. The Super variant can carry a larger array of weapons as well as more of them and is capable of returning to the carrier while still carrying unspent munitions, a big savings in dollars. The first F/A-18E flight was in 1995 and began delivery to the USN in 1999.
The present day VFA-31 “Tomcatters” began as VF-1B on July 1, 1935 and was equipped with F4B aircraft. VFA-31 is the second oldest active USN squadron with VFA-14 being the oldest since its formation in 1919. VFA-31 and its various designations have flown 9 different types of aircraft including the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18E “Rhino” which they received in 2006 when they were VF-31. The Super Hornet came with the new designator VFA-31. When not assigned to a carrier VFA-31 makes their home at NAS Oceana, Virginia.
