Description

Explore the magical paradise of Bavaria, full of wonder and beauty. Visit areas of Germany, Austria and Southern Europe. Civilian employees who work at facilities of the Armed Forces Recreation Center pursue fun adventures in Oberammergau, Berchtesgaden, Munich, Lake Chiemsee, and other locations. Meanwhile, Germany is attacked by the Red Army Faction. This book is one of a kind... A delightful blend of mystery, terror, history and the lifestyle of the early 1970s, it is a story never told before about these places and events. The colorful characters enjoy playful nightlife, food, sports and traveling together. Strong friendships are developed during a period of one year. The protagonist is Lucas Gary, a chef who comes from Southern California. Throughout the book, he provides information about food and cooking. He loves the competition of indoor and outdoor sports, especially those which you play with a ball. While Lucas experiences his own personal conflicts, he also witnesses conflicts of persons he meets along the way and becomes close to. Some conflicts appear to be resolved in this story, but the readers may have to think a little deeper. Interaction between the characters is up-beat and mostly good camaraderie, but the story is studded with terrorist activities and dark clouds of Nazi influence on German cultures. Travel with Lucas and his AFRC friends who visit famous hotels, bars, ski resorts and more: Learn history from the locals in Germany, Bavaria, Austria, Italy, Spain, the French Riviera, Morocco and Switzerland. Ferry to islands of Ibiza and Formentera. Enjoy beach life at the Costa del Sol. Ski at the Zugspitze and the Matterhorn. Tour castles of King Ludwig II. Attend the Austrian Grand Prix. Anyone interested in history will learn about the cultures of Bavaria and surrounding areas, leading up to the early 70s. This book of historical fiction is entertaining. All the characters and historical settings bring the readers into the story, engage them in various explorations and challenge them with different perspectives. [Suggested for adult reading.]

Author Biography:

After 50 years in the restaurant business, James Earl retired. He now lives with his wife in a small seaside community, enjoying the ocean and the mountains. James has always loved historical fiction. In recent months, someone asked how his book came about. He replied, "I never thought much about writing a book or being an author. I just started writing and this novel emerged, forty-four chapters later, in 630 pages. Having spent a lot of time in Europe, I traveled to most of the areas mentioned in this book. I like history and did extensive research to support the events in the story. However, it appears that I don't mind breaking a few rules and coloring outside the lines, literally and figuratively. I often think about the days when young adults, myself included, were so involved with sex, marijuana, and rock 'n' roll in the 60s and 70s. My most memorable experiences happened with new friends in Bavaria. It was a fun and wild adventure!" High in the Bavarian Alps is a fascinating story woven around Lucas Gary, the protagonist. Activities involve extreme lifestyles of the early 1970s in an American military playground-the fairy-tale setting of the Bavarian Alps. Interesting characters work for Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC) facilities and come from around the world. If you like historical fiction, you will love this novel.
