Description

A new version of Pirandello's Enrico IV (Henry IV) translated into contemporary American English. After suffering a head injury, an Italian aristocrat developed the delusional belief that he was the medieval emperor Henry IV. For the twenty years preceding the play he maintained this illusion, forcing all those around him to assume roles in Henry IV's "court" and act out scenes from the emperor's life. But now, people from Henry's past have come to visit; for their own selfish reasons they need to drag Henry back to reality. As their schemes and intrigues unfold, the play asks the question: what are sanity, and insanity? And in a world gone mad, who are the real victims?
