He Kohinga Kiwaha is a comprehensive, fun guide to modern Maori idioms. Designed for the intermediate to advanced speaker of te reo Maori, the book is unique in being totally in Maori - so that examples and explanatory text are all in the language. First published in 1999, the book sold out of its first edition and its 2004 reprint. Each of the ten chapters in the book introduces idioms that are used for specific situations - at work, in different social situations, among friends and family - with separate sections on different language constructions. Examples are given using two characters, Pare and Rangi, who also feature in the amusing illustrations that run throughout the book.
