Description

Who was responsible for designing the Admiral Popov, the circular Russian battleship that wouldn't steer straight, and why did Lord Anson set out to circumnavigate the world with a crew of Chelsea Pensioners? These and other questions are answered in this absorbing and entertaining look at the misjudgements and oversights of captains, fleet commanders, strategic planners and ship designers through the ages. Authoritative and diverting, Great Naval Blunders roams the seas of over two thousand years of military misdemeanours, providing in-depth analyses of what went wrong in key naval battles, such as Navarino, Lissa and the Dardanelles, and offering many intriguing and bizarre anecdotes. Book jacket.
