Description

When the Tristan synposium met in London in March 1986 the immediate consensus was that it should concern itself with the version of the legend written by Gottfried von Strassenburg. The papers in this volume consider Gottfried's poem from a number of different standpoints. Michael Curschmann explores the relationship between the poem and the iconography which the legend gave rise to in the early 13th century. Brown and Jaeger examine Gottfried's presentation of court ceremony. Martin Jones addresses the question of whether Gottfried's accounts of armed conflict are intended as a critique of the model of chivalry presented in Arthurian romance. Adrian Stevens emphasizes the clerical nature of Gottfried's writing and argues that one of his literary aims was to render the qualities to be found in classical Latin texts into the vernacular. Other essays focus on various characters in the narrative and try to show what Gottfried's handling of them reveals about his attitude to love, marriage, kingship and probity.
