I absolutely loved this book, couldn't stop reading it once I started and ended up reading it in one satisfying sitting. A little more serious than Echols previous romantic comedies but she pulled it off beautifully. It starts when 17 year old Meg, the protagonist, and a few of her friends (including her good-for-nothing boyfriend Eric) head out to the railway bridge. The bridge is off-bounds but kids keep going back there for dares and it's rumoured that a couple died in a terrible accident years ago. They are busted and arrested by Officer John After whose life mission is to patrol the bridge and Meg's punishment for trespassing is to ride with Officer After – who turns out to be only 19 years old – for a week in his police car. Even though the plot is simple at its core, it is defiantly not lacking. It remains a believable and extremely complex character-driven story. While nothing feels to over the top being an extremely well-written, beautiful book, with so many layers of details. You will not be able to put it down.

Description

High school senior Meg revels in being a rebel. She sports choppy blue hair, and tight t-shirts, cuts class, and is often found where she's not supposed to be. Like hanging out on a railroad-tracks-covered bridge that's off-limits to trespassers. When she and her friends are busted for trespassing and underage drinking, she's sentenced to spend her spring break riding along with a rookie police officer on his nightshift patrol. Compounding the punishment is the fact that the cop, John After, is only two years older than Meg, and a former classmate to boot. He thinks he has Meg's number and has nothing but contempt for her childish rebellion. Meg in turn has nothing but contempt for Officer After's straight-laced, by-the-book attitude. But Meg has her reasons for lashing out, and John has his reasons for his need for law and order. And they're about to discover that they have a lot more in common than either one of them could have dreamed...
