This book considers some of the most fundamental challenges to democracy in an era of globalization. At the most abstract and normatively fundamental level these concern the nature of the values upon which a global commitment to democracy can be built. They also concern the relationship between democracy and other equally urgent goals for humanity, such as human rights and development. The challenges to democracy in an era of globalization continue to be challenges to the democratic state. A move toward global democracy also requires democratic arrangements incorporating greater levels of institutional complexity, and a new relationship between the democratic state and law.This book explores a range issues and debates including: Global Democracy and Universal Values Democracy, Human Rights and Development Global Constitutionalism Democracy and Institutional Complexity Challenges to the Democratic State Global Democracy and its Difficulties will appeal to a range of academics, scholars and students who work across fields such a political theory, international law, comparative politics and political economy and particularly those with an interest in the political, economic, legal and moral aspects of democratization.
