1923. Kipling, English short-story writer, novelist and poet, who celebrated the heroism of British colonial soldiers in India and Burma, was the first Englishman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. This volume contains Kipling's travel writings. Upon reaching San Francisco, Kipling immediately began recording the sights and sounds of boomtown America. For four months he toured the United States, publishing accounts of his journey in the Pioneer, a major newspaper in western India, which he later collected and published in From Sea to Sea.
