Description

Collins Big Cat supports every primary child on their reading journey from phonics to fluency. Top authors and illustrators have created fiction and non-fiction books that children love to read. Levelled for guided and independent reading, each book includes ideas to support reading. Teaching and assessment support and eBooks are also available. When Freya’s father dies, she stands to become clan chief, but her wicked cousin Ranald wants the position for himself! Can Freya escape the angry mob – and legendary underwater monster – and get to freedom? Sapphire/Band 16 books offer longer reads to develop children's sustained engagement with texts and are more complex syntactically. Pages 54 and 55 allow children to re-visit the content of the book, supporting comprehension skills, vocabulary development and recall. Ideas for reading in the back of the book provide practical support and stimulating activities.

Author Biography:

When we came up with the idea for Freya, we had wanted to write about an actual Scottish female clan chief, and this proved hard to find. But we got so inspired by all our research on women in Scottish history, and in particular by the North Berwick witch trials, that Freya’s fictional story came to us in a flash: a female clan chief falsely accused of witchcraft who flees for her life! Working closely together, we very quickly wrote a story summary, devising all the plot points, and from then the script poured out of John. The story really resonated with him, perhaps because he is Scottish. Sandra loves drawing dramatic scenes, historical settings and moody Scottish landscapes, so was in her element. We love making graphic novels because they’re perfect for bringing stories with lots of action, excitement and emotions to life, using dynamic images, narrative text and dialogue all at the same time.
