"You will cry... And your heart will break."

This story really got to me. It's the story of an incestuous relationship between a brother and sister, which in most cases I would find appalling and profoundly disturbing. In this story, it is just sad. This is one of those stories that will stick with you long after you have read it. While this is obviously a taboo and sickening subject, I found while reading this that I hoped they could find a way to be together, that they would find out that one of them was adopted. In the end they were just victims of abuse by a father who left them a long time ago and a mother who could not be bothered by them. I never blamed them for falling in love, I blamed the parents who neglected them, who were supposed to love and support them which ultimately brought them together and into a forbidden love affair. There has never before been a book like Forbidden in YA literature. Tabitha Suzuma has written an unconventional love story so powerful it will suck you under, suffocate you, and force you to rethink all that you thought about love and relationships.

Description

Perfect for readers who enjoyed Flowers in the Attic, this is a heartbreaking and shocking novel about siblings Lochan and Maya, their tumultuous home life, and the clandestine, and taboo, relationship they form to get through it. Seventeen-year-old Lochan and sixteen-year-old Maya have always felt more like friends than siblings. Together they have stepped in for their alcoholic, wayward mother to take care of their three younger siblings. As de facto parents to the little ones, Lochan and Maya have had to grow up fast. And the stress of their lives--and the way they understand each other so completely--has also brought them closer than two siblings would ordinarily be. So close, in fact, that they have fallen in love. Their clandestine romance quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. And yet, they cannot stop what feels so incredibly right. As the novel careens toward an explosive and shocking finale, only one thing is certain: A love this devastating has no happy ending.
