Description

Each Christian tradition has a strong tendency to believe that their perspective on what it means to "follow Jesus" should be normative for all Christians. Contrary to this conceit, this book argues that a full-orbed understanding of what it means to follow Jesus must incorporate the best insights of each tradition. This book will provide the contours of that richer more comprehensive understanding. It will provide a rich resource for seminaries and churches within each of 12 Christian traditions to "continue" the initial conversations reported on by means of twelve sets of "Questions for Future Conversations." "Mutual understanding, mutual respect, mutual edification, and mutual education are only some of the results from this "respectful conversation" hosted by Harold Heie among representatives of twelve different Christian traditions. Yet the book also displays a welcome frankness at the various times when its attentive, well-meaning, and patient contributors simply agree to disagree. Above all, the method of 'deep listening' that Heie has promoted in several such conversations, often on topics that usually produce much more heat than light, should be an encouragement for all to go and do likewise. When attention replaces shouting, and charity overcomes suspicion, the Kingdom of God really is a little more evident." -Mark Noll "This volume offers many valuable examples of how Christians of differing traditions and viewpoints can broaden their outlooks by listening sympathetically to each other. While taking into account that disagreements will remain, it is a most helpful reminder that, before we criticize, we should attempt to learn from others and appreciate their strengths." -George Marsden "As I have observed Harold's devotion to promoting the cultivation of listening skills over the years of our friendship, it is clear to me that empathy is at the heart of what he is about. Empathy is my experiencing the feelings and concerns of others as if they were my own."-Richard Mouw
