Description

When 55-year-old physician Dan Jameson suffers recurrence of the malignant lymphoma for which he has already endured radiation and chemotherapy, he decides not to go through the grueling treatment process again. He opts instead to take whatever time he has left and follow his baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles, through its 1993 season. Plans change when outside a Wisconsin diner, a young woman in her twenties asks for a ride. Janice Browning later insists on accompanying him on his journey. As they travel the country in Dan's Toyota, they banter, sightsee, argue, share dreams, and talk about death. Over time Janice learns to appreciate Dan's devotion to his team but refuses to let him become disengaged from life and its possibilities.

Author Biography:

Rich Frost grew up in upstate New York. After earning degrees from Wesleyan University and Duke University College of Medicine, he completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Kentucky. In addition to his medical career, he wrote a regular travel column for over 25 years, and now authors a regional history column. He has published three compendiums of regional travel, and two books on topics of upstate New York history. The most recent of these tells the story of a nineteenth-century resort on New York's Lake Champlain that served as President McKinley's summer White House, then later became transformed into a Jesuit seminary, and now a college. He also wrote the book and lyrics for the musical "Battling in Plattsburgh," based on a crucial confrontation near the end of the War of 1812; it was produced in conjunction with that event's bicentennial in September 2014. His practice of internal medicine helped provide the background and factual basis necessary for the novel "Final Season." And yes, Rich is a lifelong Oriole fan, so the devotion portrayed by the story's protagonist comes honestly. "Final Season" marks his fiction debut.
