Description

'I have tried to travel with a seeing eye, for what I saw the audience saw.' This is the first biographical account of someone who worked for the British newsreels to be published in over twenty years. At the invitation of the British Unviersities Film & Video Council, John Turner has written the account of his life with the newsreels, which serves both as a record of a remarkable career and as a history of the sound newsreels in Britain. It documents in absorbing detail his filming of such key historical events as the Malta convoys, Indian independence, Gandhi's funeral, and the royal tours of the 1950s, but it also illustrates the working life of the newsreel cameraman, and his particular view of the world and its news. Filming History will be of importance to social, cultural and political historians, university courses on media and communication studies, and anyone interested in the history of British film and the important part played in that history by the newsreels.
