When a massive earthquake hits Los Angeles, water and power shut down, transportation is destroyed, and phones are made inoperable. With the devastated city in chaos, an isolated hillside community in the Santa Monica Mountains becomes the target of a roving inner-city gang. Paralyzed by fear, the neighborhood hopes for rescue, a highly unlikely prospect, but Maggie Slater, a young woman with a six-year-old child, decides to take action.
