Description

As yet there is no material beyond the proposal. We can expect it to be highly illustrated and very beautiful. Penrose takes several mathematical concepts and explores them through the works of M. C. Escher - the notion of 'impossible objects' (like the Penrose Triangle), tessellations, infinity. In his proposal he describes the book as being 'to some extent a coffee table book', so it needs to be very visually beautiful, so I think we prioritize the art over the maths. I think John Barrow's COSMIC IMAGERY and the illustrated edition of Stephen Hawking's A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME are the market we're aiming at. · Maths understood through art: these are huge, complex mathematical theories, made accessible through their application in the art of M C Escher. · A world authority: Roger Penrose is Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the 1988 Wolf Prize for physics, which he shared with Stephen Hawking for their contribution to our understanding of the universe. · Previous bestsellers: Penrose's previous book Road to Reality was a bestseller
