Elijah the Tishbite was a great Old Testament prophet thought to be from the city of Tishbe, near Galilee. The nation of Israel had fallen deeply into idol worship and was resting on the fulcrum of catastrophe. Rescue was necessary, but not imminent. Elijah was sent to the region by the Holy Spirit to bring about change, change that would bring people back to worship the one and only true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Elijah arrived on the scene almost in a blur to face the obstacle of King Ahab and his illicit wife Jezebel. Jezebel was beautiful and enticing, but she was notoriously evil as well. It was through Jezebel and her heritage that Baal worship had been introduced to the people of Israel. Jezebel corrupted her husband and convinced him to promote within his nation the pagan worship she was accustomed to. Elijah feared Jezebel because of her utter hateful and cruel demeanor. He had to learn to trust in the Lord to lead him--and Israel--out of the mess it was in. This God-led Elijah fought the evil prophets of Baal in one of the greatest miracles of God ever written within the covers of the Holy Bible.
