Description

The idea to write this book arose from the need to let future generations know what our country India was really like during the post-partition era. As time passes, memories are forgotten or buried in minds. My near and dear ones who have lived through those times have nearly gone. My motivation is to keep something of those times alive. How many of us realize what a price we had to pay for getting freedom, which is really our birthright? How many of us have seen our country emerge out of ashes, literally, and still trying to stand erect? A story form makes it alive and interesting. Mere facts and figures, makes it dull. The characters are all fictional, but places and incidents are real. Our Tryst with Destiny led us to face unthinkable challenges. When the British as the colonial power left India, the country was divided into two. Millions of our people were as if drowning in depth of despair. They were homeless, hungry, hounded, caught up in strife, chaos, and lawlessness. It was our darkest hour in history. The only ray of light in total darkness was that we were at last free. We could breathe. But at what price? To be cut up into two countries, not with any welfare at heart for us, but as a shrewd and cunning move by the British. To stress their point of view, they divided us. After all, who would want to leave the bird that lays the golden eggs with blessings. Britain had made their place in the world by plundering us at every level. They certainly did not want to leave, without leaving us torn apart.
