Description

One coyote hound, one mission: what begins as an attempt to understand and rehabilitate one rescue dog turns into an exploration of the wider dog world and the special bond people share with dogs. What do we learn from living and working with a dog? Based on conversations with dog-owners and professional handlers, Dog-wise shares the secret of living happily with a dog, learning more about ourselves, and applying those lessons to everyday life. In Dog-wise, we meet a range of canines and share their stories--from show, detection, and assistant dogs to search and rescue, guardian and sled dogs. We follow herding dogs at work, prepare a dog-team for sledding, and sit in on a therapy dog session. Learn what police dogs have in common with therapy dogs, what hunters and herders share, and what our vets can tell about us from our dogs. If dogs make us more human, as some people suggest, then what particular dogs have to teach us is worth understanding. Judith Wright is a Canadian writer who lives in Saskatchewan. Her most recent non-fiction has been published in Prairies North, The Western Producer, The Gardener and Harrowsmith.
