If you've seen the online trailer about this film you've seen the whole thing – this is one DJ's attempt to apply a VJ treatment, and what a bunch of self-congratulatory hype it is too. I thought I was going to see remix culture at work to create something new – but no, this is a deconstruction of the original ‘Birth of a nation’ and not a very good one at that. Instead of analysis there's some bland generalised statements presented as shocking truth. Anyone with half a brain could figure out that if this film was shown in the White house by Woodrow Wilson, it would impact on domestic policy. Oops sorry, I've gone and ruined it. I mean really… Where's the rest of it-
DJ Spooky might be great at mixing music, but frankly that's what he should stick to. A few pretty lines and a kaleidoscope effect is not a remix, and this is far from what could've been a half way decent bricolage or challenging documentary. Pass me the bucket, this is one big yawn.
