Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) war ein französischsprachiger Schriftsteller, Philosoph, Pädagoge, Naturforscher und Komponist der Aufklärung. Rousseau hatte großen Einfluss auf die politische Theorie des späten 18. sowie des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts in ganz Europa. Er war ein wichtiger Wegbereiter der Französischen Revolution. Sein Werk ist unlösbarer Bestandteil der französischen und europäischen Literatur- und Geistesgeschichte. In Rousseaus pädagogischem Hauptwerk Émile oder über die Erziehung wird die fiktive Erziehung eines Jungen beschrieben. Rousseaus Theorien beeinflussten Immanuel Kant und viele namhafte Pädagogen, so z. B. Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, Joachim Heinrich Campe, Adolph Diesterweg, Maria Montessori, Ellen Key, Hartmut von Hentig und Dietrich Benner.
