Description

Excerpt from Deutsches Lesebuch In the second lesson the umlauts, and in the third the double vowels, in the order given upon pages 2 - 4, are practised in precisely the same manner as the simple vowels. Since the uttering of umlaut-sounds is, for Ame cans, a matter of the greatest difficulty, the teacher should pronounce them over and over again in the presence of the class, and require the pupils to repeat them after him. If one will only persevere in this course, there will be a gradual improvement in the pronunciation, and it will finally become entirely German. The fourth lesson is devoted exclusively to a review of the first four pages. The teacher requires not only that each individual vowel, or combination of vowels, be read and repeated after him, but he also dictates them in order that the pupils may learn to write them correctly from the sound. Besides the sounds themselves, the pupil has acquired a small vocabulary, con sisting principally of technical expressions. The teacher should be careful to put his questions in such a form as to lead the pupil to use these few expressions over and over again.
