Dersu Uzala
Dersu, an eccentric Mongolian frontiersman, is taken on as a guide by a Russian surveying crew. While the soldiers at first perceive him as a naïve and comical relic of an uncivilised age, Dersu quickly proves himself otherwise, becoming their unlikely savior.
Critic Reviews:
- " The film's finest passage occurs when the hunter and the captain are stranded on a frozen lake-a harrowing, spooky-gorgeous spectacle of supernatural realism. " – Elliott Stein (Film Comment Magazine)
- " To Arseniev, Dersu embodies something civilized men have lost… Neither can really understand the other — which is precisely what makes their friendship so special. " – Steven D. Greydanus (Decent Films)
- " Every frame of Dersu Uzala is simply beautiful to look at. . . . Kurosawa's 140-minute masterpiece is a . . . quietly captivating experience. " – Brian Gibson (Vue Weekly – Edmonton, Alberta)
