Description

A Novella of Mystery, Magic, and Marionettes in 19th Century Burma. A traditional Burmese puppetry troupe is more than meets the eye: these puppets hold living spirits. Disaster strikes on the eve of a performance for a royal wedding, when one of their puppets is murdered - his neck broken, his spirit gone. They cannot perform without him, but failure to perform could cost them their livelihoods, or worse, their lives. Aung, the troupe's elderly singer, must navigate the labyrinth of court intrigues to solve the mystery and appease the angry spirits: goals which might might be at odds. Assisting him - or is that, hindering? - is the troupe's enthusiastic but youngest puppet. Can they salvage their performance and save their lives? A story of magic and traditions of south-east Asia. "A wonderful blend of conspiracy and playful spirits, with a pair of unique detectives - and no strings attached!" -- Steven Poore, author of Heir to the North.

Author Biography:

Karen L. Abrahamson writes mystery, fantasy and romantic fiction, and often likes to blend all three. She's best known for her American Geological Survey urban fantasy series that involves a race of beings who can change the world through their maps. Her first mystery novel, Through Dark Water, is set on the wild coast of British Columbia, Canada. Many of her stories take place in exotic settings around the world, in places she has lived or visited. She has a special affection for Myanmar/Burma, its people, nats and puppets. Karen currently lives on the west coast of Canada with bald eagles, bears and the Pacific Ocean as neighbours. Daniel Hand is British author and military historian. His work has appeared in Swords and Sorcery Magazine, Myriad Lands: Volume 1 anthology (also from Guardbridge Books), and Dekhol, the magazine of the Burma Star Association. He is Chair of the International Writers Fellowship.
