Description

What is counselling and how does it differ from other helping relationships? What are counselling skills and are they teachable? This book answers these and other core questions about counselling. It sets out from the view that counselling enables people to take charge of their lives and to feel empowered to make changes. A number of changes have been made for the second edition. The book outlines various ways in which counsellors can work with clients, helping them with how they think, what they feel, how they cope, how they behave, with their unconscious problems, their physical problems, and their spiritual problems. Additional chapters cover 'helping the helpers', which looks at the boundaries between the counsellor and the client, and at the training, support and supervision that is available: coaching and how it differs from counselling, and relapse prevention, or helping people maintain their gains. Counselling in both one-to-one and group situations is covered, and recurring case studies are used throughout. This edition also includes more material on counselling processes, outcomes and models. A new concluding chapter pulls the whole book together, and a glossary defining counselling terms has been added.
