Description

This study of the establishment of French colonial rule in Cambodia in the late nineteenth century is, according to the publisher's reviewer, 'a highly original piece of scholarship' which 'constitutes a major contribution to our understanding of Cambodian and French colonial history'. The book provides an analysis of the gradual establishment of French colonialism in the late nineteenth century, bringing the story alive in all its complexities by tracing the lives of a number of failed colonists - mauvais colonistes - notably Thomas Caraman, thereby shifting the focus away from governor-generals, grand discourses and the simple view of colonialism as 'colonisers' versus 'colonised', to explore how things actually worked themselves out on the ground. It examines in particular the 'civilising mission' and educational initiatives; the slow destruction of the indigenous justice system; the policing of sexual relations between colonisers and colonised; the theft of Cambodian land and taxes by the colonising power; and the brutal repression of resistance wherever and whenever it appeared.

Author Biography:

Gregor Muller is an archivist at the National Archives of Cambodia and a delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross. He lives in Cambodia on a Mekong island near Phnom Penh.
