It's 1947 San Francisco. Hollywood has-been Alexander Blade, former child heartthrob of the golden age of silent films, returns from the war to restart his life as a private investigator. He rents an office in the Mayfair Building, hires a Chinatown exotic dancer as his secretary, and tries to make sense of the new, post-war San Francisco. The city is changing, transformed by the Chinatown club scene, North Beach hipster Bohemians, and Cold War paranoia. He's got a new client, a missing person case. But when his former Hollywood cameraman turns up in his office murdered, Blade is drawn into a bizarre series of deaths of former child movie actors. To get to the bottom of it, Blade must revisit a time when Hollywood knew him as "Buster" Blade, Wonder Boy of the Westerns. Here he finds that he's been cast in one final scene that will end in murder. Cold War, Hot Lead is the first installment in the Frisco Detective mystery series. It's a return to the pulp fiction era of the 1940s, where modern sensibilities barely exist, and our hero struggles to imagine a world dominated by television, without pulp magazines or radio shows.
