Description

The play received its world premiere (under the title Floyd's) at The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis in the summer of 2019. After the death of George Floyd, Nottage changed the title. Clyde's received its New York premiere on Broadway at Second Stage's Hayes Theatre in the fall of 2021. The cast was led by multiple Emmy Award-winners Uzo Aduba (In Treatment, Orange is the New Black) and Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us). Lynn Nottage won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play Sweat. She is the first woman playwright to be honored twice. The play was also awarded the 2016 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play, and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. After a sold-out run at The Public Theatre, Sweat moved to Broadway. Her play Ruined was also the recipient of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Nottage's other plays include: Mlima's Tale, By The Way, Meet Vera Stark; Intimate Apparel; Fabulation, or The Re-Education of Undine; Crumbs from the Table of Joy; Las Meninas; Mud, River, Stone; Por'knockers; and POOF! Nottage wrote the book for the world premiere musical adaption of Sue Monk Kidd's novel The Secret Life of Bees, with music by Duncan Sheik and lyrics by Susan Birkenhead. Nottage also wrote the book for MJ: The Musical, inspired by the life of Michael Jackson, using Jackson's vast catalog of songs. She is the co-founder of the production company Market Road Film. Nottage is the writer/producer of the Netflix series She's Gotta Have It, directed by Spike Lee. She is a graduate of Brown University and Yale School of Drama. She is also an Associate Professor in the Theatre Department at Columbia School of the Arts. Nottage is the recipient of the Lucille Lortel Fellowship and Visiting Research Fellowship at Princeton University. Her other honors include: MacArthur "Genius Grant"' Fellowship, Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award, PEN/Laura Pels Master Playwright Award, Merit and Literature Award from the Academy of Arts and Letters, Columbia University Provost Grant, Doris Duke Artist Award, The Joyce Foundation Commission Project & Grant, Madge Evans-Sidney Kingsley Award, Nelson A. Rockefeller Award for Creativity, The Dramatist Guild Hull-Warriner Award, Horton Foote Prize, Helen Hayes Award, the Lee Reynolds Award, and the Jewish World watch iWitness Award.
