Description

This work traces the history of US secret intelligence from the founding of the nation through to the 21st century. Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones argues that while the intelligence community has had some successes, it has also played a confidence trick on the American people, inventing threats instead of analysing them and demanding too many dollars for its services. The preface to this new edition shows how intelligence boosters have taken advantage of the events in New York on 11th September.

Author Biography:

Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones is professor of American history at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of numerous books, including The CIA and American Democracy and Peace Now! American Society and the Ending of the Vietnam War, both published by Yale University Press.
