Description

Johannes' work is truly unique and timeless by challenging artisticconventions through an analogue method that seems to be forgotten in adigitised world. His objects break down the barrier between the object andthe viewer. The central element of his photography is that his objectsinvite the viewer on a journey of retrospective discovery. His objects seemto be in a steady flux without revealing their true identity. They hint butdo not expose. They tease but do not give in. This seek-and-hide spielbetween the viewer and the object seduces them into a dialogue with theobject attempting to unlock its secrets with ever more layers ofimagination. This leads the viewer to let down their guard opening up theirsubconsciousness. The object then shifts yet again and the viewer feels theurge to conclude the dialogue by completing the narrative with his ownimagination. At that point Johannes' art creates an inescapableintrospective back-loop between the object and the viewer. Whilst theobject stays opaque the viewer finds himself being exposed by developing awandering imagination. Playfully compromising the integrity of the viewerthrough art goes beyond art because it renders the viewer as a piece of arthimself. This integral part of Johannes' work reflects his sustaineddisobedience to artistic norms and social barriers. This approach to artreveals the central element of his art in general. It allows the viewer tosee much more than there is. (Matt Kuppers, 2020)
