I really enjoyed this DVD documentary on steam railways in China. I was also impressed with the condition in which the DVD arrived and the price charged by Mighty Ape.

"Scenery footage alone is worth the purchase."

John Agnew goes where most have not been able, onto some of China's secondary lines, even denied of their existence by the authorities. He captures some footage of steam locos from the mighty to little shunters all hauling massively disproportionate loads and a lot being maintained under very trying and primitive conditions. I would recommend this to those that are not even railway buffs as some of the scenery is awe inspiring.

Description

John Agnew is a crazy New Zealander who has been hunting down the last steam trains in the world. We join John as he tracks down the last Chariots of Fire on the final frontier China, and the remote icy wastes of inner Mongolia.

John had heard about the last labyrinth of steam railways but the Chinese authorities denied their existence and even refused him permission to use his camera. After many adventures he became the first westerner to photograph parts of this unknown lost world.

We visit places where time has stood still and where steam is a modern power. In remote Mongolia we are overwhelmed by the spectacle and majesty of the massive QJ locomotives hauling their enormous loads over the one thousand kilometre JITONG LINE, where for a decade, steam has been making its last mighty stand.

We come away with an understanding of the force that drives John Agnew's passion, with an affection and a sense of sad loss for these magnificent locomotives, these CHARIOTS OF FIRE, now on the brink of oblivion. The LAST STEAM TRAINS IN THE UNIVERSE.

BONUS CLIP: Line side views featuring the 1,000km JITONG LINE in Mongolia offered unique scenes of the mighty QJ ENGINES making steams last stand. This bonus clip showcases some of Johns most dramatic action shots that have never before been released on DVD.
