Carlyle believed there should be a leader, a hero, whom people must recognize and worship. This is exemplified in his famous work, On Heroes and Hero Worship, where his examples ranged from Mohammed to Shakespeare and Dr. Johnson. Contents: Book I. Ecclefechan; Book II. From Boy to Man (1806-18); Book III. Apprenticeship (1818-22); Book IV. Wandering Years (1822-4); and Book V. Romance (1824-6).
