This “can't put down” book is the story of a mother left with a sense of injustice when the murderer of her twins (her partner) was acquitted by a jury after a defense lawyer used a potentially high risk strategy of insinuating she did it. Police of course knew this was impossible given she was miles away, but the sexism against a poor brown mother was enough to raise reasonable doubt in the juries mind. Once it was established that maybe she was a type that could have done it – then it did not matter whether she did or whether even the killer did. A witchhunt was in motion. This is a book that makes hardened men cry, at the loss of two beautiful babies in a cycle of intergenerational abuse, and at the cruel vilification of the innocent mother. It is enough to show anyone how juries can be manipulated with incomplete facts, and how important it is to avoid our bias to judge a book by the cover. Especially a human one.
