Description

For designers looking for their first or next job, here is everything they didn't learn in art school. From deciding where to look for work, to writing a cover letter, to assembling a portfolio, this book will help designers to project a professional, employable image. Special sections reveal the unspoken rules and pitfalls of the applications and interview process, thus giving readers a competitive edge in the job market. It includes advice from interviews with over 40 frontline professionals from the industry: employed designers, people who hire designers, career counsellors, and business owners; and advice on starting a network of contacts, creating a Web site, and seeking work through an agency. It includes a resume gallery and a discussion of the pros and cons of starting a business; and offers perspective of a designer fresh out of school, looking for work and facing frustrations; targeted to author's peers, who have the same challenges and will be attuned to his voice. It also includes lively, insightful & humorous anecdotes from personal experiences of interview subjects.

Author Biography:

MICHAEL JEFFERSON is a graduate of Pratt Institute. He quickly learned that his studies in computer graphics and graphic design did not prepare him for finding work and his frustration led him to explore the subject of job hunting in the design field. In the course of his research and interviews with experienced professionals, he became an expert on the application process and it is that research that resulted in this book.
