CSM Stanley Hollis VC. Stanley Hollis received the highly prestigious Victoria Cross for his actions on D-Day – a distinction not bestowed to any other British or Commonwealth soldier for their actions in that day. Along with his company commander he was charged with investigating two German pillboxes that had been bypassed during the push up the beaches, from the first, he took all but 5 of the occupants prisoner, and through a combination of the use of his STEM gun and grenades forced the capture of 26 more Germans from the second. Later that very same day, he led an attack against a German field gun, though unsuccessfully. In the retreat, realised that two of his men had been left behind. With no regard for his own safety he went forward alone, a diversion allowing his men back to retreat safely. He displayed the utmost gallantry and saved the lives of many of his men.
